Imagine setting sail from the small and picturesque harbor of Ognina, an ancient refuge for fishermen from Catania, where the scent of sea salt still blends with memories of wooden boats and folk tales. Your boat glides slowly over the cobalt-colored sea and from far away your gaze rests on the imposing profile of the Norman Castle of Aci Castello: a fortress carved into the black lava rock, rising as a millennia-old sentinel above the waves where we will make a stop for snorkeling . Its basalt walls tell of ancient eruptions and dominations that have followed one another like layers of overlapping lava. Continuing along the coast, the landscape changes into a mosaic of cliffs and coves, until it reveals the almost mythological scenery of Acitrezza. Here rise, austere and solemn, the famous Faraglioni dei Ciclopi: gigantic columns of solidified lava that, according to the legend, were hurled by Polyphemus at the fleeing Ulysses.
